1. Exmoor Zoo
It wouldn’t be a complete list without including the local favourite, Exmoor Zoo. Tourists and locals alike love the zoo for the variety of animals it offers. This is great for friends or families heading out for a day to see some wildlife. Exmoor Zoo is home to several endangered species that you may not get the chance to see in the wild, which makes the experience all the more valuable.
Why not take a packed lunch and spend a day looking at animals big and small?
2. Heddon Valley
Head for a walk – no pun intended – Heddon Valley and take in the stunning scenery around you. The perfect blend of greenery and coastal views, this walk cannot be missed when you’re in Exmoor.
With a woodland walk ending up at Heddon’s Mouth, it is the perfect place for a stroll. If you’re going in the summer, why not have a dip in the sea? The small cove is a great place to stop off and either dip your toes in or go for a full swim, then head back to your holiday cottage to cosy up.
3. Cliff Railway
A place you cannot miss in Exmoor. Lynton and Lynmouth is a beautiful historic area with some of the best views the region has to offer. The best way to see these views is on the Cliff Railway that connects the twin villages – the highest and steepest water-powered railway in the world, dating back to 1890. It is only a short journey but on a clear day you can see all the way across the channel to South Wales!
4. Dunster Castle
If you love architecture, this is the place to visit. Dunster alone is a lovely village to go for a wander, but don’t miss the historic Dunster Castle. This is hands down one of the most beautiful buildings in Exmoor. Whether you love history or the magic of castles, this is a great day out for all the family. Dunster holiday cottages are available if you’d like to base yourself nearby.
5. Paddle-Boarding/Kayaking
If you have your own paddleboard or kayak, take it down to one of the many beaches Exmoor has to offer – 29% of Exmoor is made up of North Devon coastline. Or hire equipment at Combe Martin and head out to sea. This is the perfect thing to do on a summer day in Exmoor, as you can head to a small cove only reachable from the water!
This would make for a great spot for a picnic.
6. Exmoor Dark Skies Walk
This is a magical walk, perfect for astronomy lovers or anyone who wants a calming night-time walk. With the large expanse of moors and valleys and no buildings or street lights, you’ll be under a blanket of darkness. On a clear night you will get to see the stars shining above you.
The Dark Sky Discovery Trail would be the perfect late-night activity before settling back into your homely holiday cottage.
7. Tarr Steps
Another walk popular with tourists and locals for its woodland views, running water and relaxing feel. This is great for an easy, relaxed walk. Of course, you can’t miss the ancient clapper bridge that gives this Exmoor gem its name – thought to date back as far as 1000 BC, making it one of the oldest of its kind in Britain.
Take a stroll along Tarr Steps and allow yourself to fully relax in the natural setting.
8. Picnic at Doone Valley
A lesser-known spot, which makes it perfect for a wander and a picnic. You could opt for a short walk and settle wherever you fancy for some food, or if you want more of a hike, continue across the moorland where you will find the remains of an old village. What could be more perfect than that? Scenic views, green fields, and a derelict village. There are so many things to do in Exmoor, but we recommend putting this historical adventure at the top of your list!
9. Greencombe Gardens
If you love flowers, this is the place for you. Greencombe Gardens has a wide array of stunning florals in all different colours to enjoy. Probably one of the most magical gardens in England – why not bring a camera and take some beautiful photos of what you see? Or if you’re an artist, draw your favourite flowers and turn this little outing into an artsy side quest.
10. Culbone Church
Another historical site for the building lovers. Known as one of the smallest churches in England, Culbone Church is a very pretty sight to see. In spring and summer there will be flowers lining the trail, which really creates a fairytale setting. Children and adults will love the magic of this walk and tiny church.
