Holiday Cottages Lynton Devon

Situated on the northern edge of Exmoor National Park, Lynton & Lynmouth is an idyllic holiday destination on the North Devon coast with majestic rolling hills and charming coastal delights.

Set alongside the East Lyn River and backed by densely wooded slopes, Lynmouth lies snugly in a lush green valley complete with a shingle beach. The mouth of the river forms a small harbour with a stone jetty that shelters the local fishing boats. Rising above the ‘shoulders’ of Lynmouth some 500ft above sea level, is Lynton, a vibrant Victorian village which retains a quaint mix of times present and times past. Surrounded by magnificent scenery, the area has often been referred to as England’s ‘Little Switzerland’.

If you want to move between the two villages, then hop onto the area’s famous funicular cliff railway. Dating back to the 1890s, it’s the highest and steepest water-powered railway in the world.

Things to do in Lynton, North Devon

Lined with clusters of old cottages and shops, Lynmouth is a true chocolate-box village. Overlooking the harbour are a number of cafés, restaurants, and shops steeped in history; including the Rising Sun Hotel, which dates back to the 14th century and was once used by smugglers.

There are plenty of walking routes in and around Lynmouth, including the Glen Lyn Gorge, which is a short distance from Lynmouth Harbour. It provides a spectacular walk, complete with woodland and waterfalls.

In the small town of Lynton, you’ll find a quaint selection of shops, tea rooms and a museum. One of our favourite things to do here is to grab a coffee from Charlie Fridays and sit in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, where you will be treated to a spectacular view of Countisbury Hill.

Lynton also acts as a ‘gateway’ to the Valley of the Rocks. Believed to have been formed during the last ice age, this famous landscape is truly remarkable. It is well worth a visit to experience its lovely walks (and cricket pitch!), all the while marvelling at the impressive scenery, sea views, and even wild goats!
